I am Number Four ~ and you're not!

Nine young fugitives from a decimated planet escape to Earth. Each has tremendous abilities and powers, and one by one, in order they are being killed. John Smith is Number 4 (Alex Pettyfer). Each time one is killed, the other nine feel it, and the alien race that destroyed their home planet is on Earth killing them off. Each survivor has a guardian to protect them until they reach maturity and control their powers.

Henri (Timothy Olyphant) is John’s. John is tired of the constant moving he is forced to endure. Henri is becoming more of a warden than a guardian, and John has just met Sarah Hart (Dianna Agron), whom he has fallen in love with. John’s race loves for life, but Sarah is the target of the local football star’s stalker-like affection which becomes a challenge for John and his emerging powers. John also befriends Sam (Callan McAuliffe) the schools outcast.

Sam’s father disappeared years ago, supposedly abducted by aliens, and has become the high school’s joke. Sam becomes aware of John’s powers and is drawn to him and Bernie John’s dog, who is more than he seems.

The Mogadorian’s are the race hunting down the Nine. They are Goth-like males with gills around their nose, bad jock-like accents, and oversized laser guns. They are on John’s trail, and he is tired of running. Number 6 (Teresa Palmer) is also tired of running, and with the death of her guardian, has decided to find the others. Together, with their abilities, they are stronger than Mogadorians.

The movie was enjoyable, had many action filled sequences, and had some well-done special effects. My only beef with the movie is that they set up the sequel too soon in the movie. John has a mysterious box left to him by his father to open when he is ready. Well the box never gets opened, and in the end, the group sets of to find the remaining of the Nine. Seriously… open the damn box, movie staying true to the book be damned. I could have done without the whole movie being based on high-school kids, but it’s not something hard to deal with.

I wish the movie industry would stop trying to be cryptic and sequel driven. It’s not about making the next Epic Saga…. It’s about making enjoyable movies! Green Lantern was a big disappointment, but the producers are promising the sequel will be better… Are you kidding me?

I am Number Four is a good, yet incomplete movie and is worth the DVD rental.
