Graeme Willy (Simon Pegg) and Clive Gollings (Nick Frost)
are English science fiction geeks attending Comi-Con in America. Afterwards,
they are touring all of the UFO iconic tourist sites like Area 51, the Black
Mailbox, and Roswell in a RV. As you can imagine, two geeks can get into a lot
of trouble on the desert back roads, and you’d be correct.
Witnessing a late night car accident, the duo come across
Paul (voiced by Seth Rogen) and escaped alien attempting to return to his home
planet. Paul has been a captive of the US Government for 60 years and has
taught them all he can. The only thing left to study is Paul’s brain, which
means they have to cut it out, which is not such a popular idea with Paul.
The threesome flees being tracked by Agent Zoil (Jason
Bateman) and a pair of rookie agents zeroing in on Paul. They share some
amusing antics and funny moments, like the abduction of Tara Walton (Blythe
Danner) a Christian zealot who has her religion shook by the very presence of
Paul.
It wouldn’t be a Seth Rogen film if it didn’t have “pot
smoking,” shameless swearing, and dick jokes, in which Paul does not deviate
from the pattern. My wife was not amused
by most of the movie, so I’d keep this film as a private indulgence if you like
simplistic comedy. The inserting of the CGI alien was very well done.
